We want a community that stands up for feminism, intersectionality and inclusion. This also means that we work in a barrier-sensitive way to ensure the greatest possible participation - whether in terms of using our spaces, the website or even our program. We want to remain critical of social power relations and also of the positions of power within our association. Thus our board is newly elected every two years and our curatorial team is re-staffed annually. We work with a “no blame culture”. We want a democratic and solidaric practice. Therefor, we make all our decisions together: every member of the association can have a say in what is implemented in the house and how. For this purpose we meet regularly for general meetings. We value mutual support. In our exhibition space we want to give room to established as well as lesser known artists. We want to give aspiring curators the opportunity to try things out with us. In our studios working materials and tools are purchased and used collectively where it makes sense.
As a non-profit association, we do not make a profit from the rental income. The total rent is used for the payment of utilities and maintenance of the house. We take care of everything that arises in connection with the house and the association on our own responsibility. By managing the building ourselves, we aim to keep rents as low as possible while providing the best possible working conditions for everyone. Our association is managed by a voluntary board. In addition to the board, there are various working groups in which all members can participate. These include, for example, the curation of the exhibition space, the café operation, the maintenance of the house or public relations. We meet at least twice a year for a general meeting to discuss the house, the association and other matters and to hold elections if necessary. All tenants are also members of the association. The ordinary, as well as the supporting membership, can be applied for even without owning a workplace. In case of conflicts or borderline violations within the association, an external awareness person is consulted.
Our association has two major goals.(1) We want to provide good and affordable studio spaces for professional artists, as well as workspace for arts and cultural research activities. (2) We want to create a community art space in Düsseldorf on Kölner Straße, with a focus on solidarity.
Do you want to share your ideas and participate in shaping the house? Then you can become a member of KöX e.V., also without renting a studio. Every person who has reached the age of 18 and shares the principles of our association can become a member. As a member of the association you have many possibilities to get actively involved: You can help with the planning and realization of events, workshops and exhibitions or participate in the organization of community life. It doesn't matter if you are an artist or not - we are looking forward to your ideas!
